Did you know that more people in the world speak Spanish
than English and that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United
States? These statements being true,
many people have thought it prudent to learn Spanish to advance their
careers. Also, many parents want their
children to learn Spanish so they will have advantages not only in the job
market, but in the world. But what do
you do when your child says “Spanish is hard.” or when you yourself begin to
doubt your abilities? For many years, I have taught native English speakers, like
myself, to speak Spanish. During that time, I have learned a few key things
that the student must do if he or she wants to learn what some consider a
difficult language, Spanish. Whatever
your reason for wanting to learn Spanish, the following list should make the
process run a little more smoothly once you begin.1. Understand
that Spanish is NOT English. I know
that sounds very obvious but it is really more difficult than it sounds. Let me explain, once you begin to study
Spanish, inevitably you will come across something that does not make sense to
you. For example, in Spanish, the
adjective comes after the noun. So if
you wanted to say red car, in Spanish you would say carro (car) rojo
(red). Many of my students have said to
me “That doesn’t make sense.” If you understand that Spanish is NOT English,
you will be better able to process the differences instead of becoming frustrated. Spanish makes sense in the way that Spanish makes sense; not in the way that
English makes sense.2. Stop telling yourself “I can’t speak/learn
Spanish.” I wish I had a dime for
every time a student gave this as an excuse.
My standard response has become simply “Say yellow.” At first they are confused but I ask them
again to say yellow. The student
eventually gives in and says yellow. And
I tell them that they just spoke Spanish.
Yellow sounds like hielo, the
Spanish word for ice. With the ice broken, (no pun intended) I go on to explain
that there is only one sound in Spanish that does not exist in English, the rr where the tongue rolls. Every other sound, we make every day. The obvious truth is that anyone who wants to
speak Spanish can do it.
3. Make a
serious commitment to learning Spanish. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you
will not be fluent in Spanish in a week’s time.
Just like anything else in life that is worth doing, learning Spanish
takes serious time and effort. But there
is a bright side, if you commit to learning at least one new thing with each
lesson, you will be well on your way to communicating the way you would
like. If you have friends who speak
Spanish, ask them to let you practice with them. This will greatly speed up your
learning. Also, pick up a couple of
books written in Spanish and try to read them.
Any words you do not recognize look them up in a Spanish/English dictionary. You will be amazed at how quickly doing this
will increase your Spanish vocabulary.I hope these tips have helped you to understand that
learning Spanish is easier than you may have thought. I have taught English speakers to speak
Spanish and I have taught Spanish speakers to speak English. Through this experience, I have learned that
Spanish is actually easier to learn than English (if English is not your native
language)! So, be grateful that you
learned English first! On your journey
to learn the beautiful Spanish language, keep in mind all the doors that will
open to you once you arrive at your destination. Learning Spanish is well worth the time and
effort. Buena Suerte (Good Luck)!Catrese West earned a Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Studies from Barton College. During her time there, she studied in Spain. I thought if I knew English that should be enough! Until I got stuck in a foreign country, I then realised that I have a lot to learn. I thought to learn Spanish is hard and could never get around it. I also could not see the need for learning Spanish as I know few other languages spoken locally. By the way, English is my second language. So you can see where I am coming from. It was however not hard to learn English since I was thought from a very young age. With more and more Spanish speaking families living in and around the world, Spanish is becoming one of the most important languages today. The first time I heard someone speaking Spanish was in a movie. I forgot the name of the movie but it was an American Movie with one of the characters saying a sentence in Spanish. I thought ‘this guy speaks in a funny way’. I was very young then and I didn’t know that one day I would start learning Spanish myself.
Now, later in my life I find myself surrounded by Spanish speaking friends and have a very good relationship with them. With people moving and relocating all the time for reasons such as employment, education just to name a few, you might find yourself in a surrounding where English is not spoken much. Or even better, you can find yourself in a Spanish speaking country like Spain for holiday. This means that more languages are being, spoken around you daily if you only care to stretch yourself a little bit and learn one of these languages. You might be stepping out of your comfort zone here but it is all worth it. The language is so romantic that when I just say ‘Te quiero tanto’ it feels so good. By the way this means I love you very much.
I’ll tell you what, learning another foreign language is not difficult. I will stick to learning Spanish because that is my preference. If you set yourself, up to learn Spanish and believe that you can with little or no difficulties then you will succeed. Positive attitude will help you go through this journey easier.
The next thing you will need is a form of a method of learning the language. There are loads of language software on the internet and many other types of tool are available to you as well. Moreover, other language software out there teaches other languages using the same methods. Just start with the easier ones and move to the difficult ones. Before you realise your will be speaking Spanish perfectly.
Can you imagine yourself doing things you never could do before such as order food in restaurants; and be able to ask for directions to where you wish to go. You will be able to have a real conversation with other Spanish-speaking people. You can walk into a hotel and ask the attendant for a room to stay in speaking the Spanish language.
The Spanish language is a beautiful and interesting language. It is similar with English language but within its own right. You speak English to communicate and describe events, places, things and to tell stories. You will be able to do exactly the same thing once you learn how to speak Spanish fluently. It will be so simple and easy you will think you have been speaking Spanish your whole life. Lastly, how well you can speak the language will only depend on how quickly can you master the language.
Big thanks to technology; it can now take only a few weeks to learn to speak Spanish with the new software that is available to you on the internet. That is because the learning software is fun, interesting, and easy to follow along. This makes learning anything-new much more fun.
